چکیده

Pyrenophora semeniperda’s current reported distribution worldwide is mainly temperate grasslands and winter cereal growing regions. Previous reports in Europe and Asia were not known, and strong doubt has been expressed that it occurs in the Old World. However, it has been discovered in Turkey and Greece. Using Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) for genetic identification, P. semeniperda’s existence in both Europe and Asia has been confirmed. Technical Note Pyrenophora semeniperda (Brittlebank and Adam) Shoemaker (anamorph Drechslera campanulata (Lev.) Sutton) is a generalist plant pathogen that can cause leaf spot disease and seed rot of annual and perennial grasses. It has also been found to infect several dicotyledonous species. Pyrenophora semeniperda is a weak pathogen when it infects the leaves or stems of grasses (Medd and Jones 1992), but shows potential to be a major pathogen of seeds. Evidence of seed infection is easily observed from the development of macroscopic fungal stromata on the seed (Meyer et al. 2007) (Fig. 1). We have observed that seed mortality due to P. semeniperda is inversely correlated with

Lack of Host Specialization on Winter Annual Grasses in the Fungal Seed Bank Pathogen Pyrenophora semeniperda

Generalist plant pathogens may have wide host ranges, but many exhibit varying degrees of host specialization, with multiple pathogen races that have narrower host ranges. These races are often genetically distinct, with each race causing highest disease incidence on its host of origin. We examined host specialization in the seed pathogen Pyrenophora semeniperda by reciprocally inoculating path...

Pyrenophoric acids B and C, two new phytotoxic sesquiterpenoids produced by Pyrenophora semeniperda.

Two new phytotoxic sesquiterpenoid acids, named pyrenophoric acids B and C, were isolated together with the related pyrenophoric and abscisic acids from solid Bromus tectorum (cheatgrass) seed culture of the seed pathogen Pyrenophora semeniperda. This fungus has been proposed as a mycoherbicide for biocontrol of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a Eurasian annual grass that has become invasive in r...

A Race for survival: can Bromus tectorum seeds escape Pyrenophora semeniperda-caused mortality by germinating quickly?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Pathogen-seed interactions may involve a race for seed resources, so that seeds that germinate more quickly, mobilizing reserves, will be more likely to escape seed death than slow-germinating seeds. This race-for-survival hypothesis was tested for the North American seed pathogen Pyrenophora semeniperda on seeds of the annual grass Bromus tectorum, an invasive plant in Nort...

De novo Genome Assembly of the Fungal Plant Pathogen Pyrenophora semeniperda

Pyrenophora semeniperda (anamorph Drechslera campulata) is a necrotrophic fungal seed pathogen that has a wide host range within the Poaceae. One of its hosts is cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum), a species exotic to the United States that has invaded natural ecosystems of the Intermountain West. As a natural pathogen of cheatgrass, P. semeniperda has potential as a biocontrol agent due to its effec...

A Predictive Model for Soil Seed Bank Outcomes in the Pyrenophora semeniperda–Bromus tectorum Pathosystem

Allen P.S., Meyer S.E., Beckstead J. (2013): A predictive model for soil seed bank outcomes in the Pyrenophora semeniperda–Bromus tectorum pathosystem. Plant Protect. Sci., 49 (Special Issue): S21–S24. Pyrenophora semeniperda is abundant in soil seed banks of Bromus tectorum, where it kills a fraction of seeds throughout the year. The pathogen engages in a race with host seeds for endosperm res...
